Baptist Medical Center, Cardiovascular Associates Partner with the University of Mississippi Medical Center Establishing an Interventional Cardiology
(PRWEB) December 15, 2005 -- Baptist Medical Center and Cardiovascular Associates, P.A. in Jackson, Miss. have partnered with the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson to expand UMC’s cardiology fellowship program by offering fellows on-site training providing diagnosis and treatment of diseases and conditions of the heart and vascular system.
Anderson Mehrle, MD and Walter Woody, MD started the one-year Interventional Cardiology Fellowship Program in July 2005. Over the course of the year, each of them is working side by side with cardiologists and medical staff to gain real-world experience in three month intensive training rotations at “Baptist and Cardiovascular Associates” and the “University of Mississippi Medical Center and Division of Cardiovascular Diseases.”
“We feel we are on the cutting edge of cardiovascular technology. These rotations will offer the fellows a whole realm of experience in a private practice setting,” said Baptist Vice President of Clinical and Ambulatory Services Steve Jackson. “We are excited to be part of this positive relationship to help foster the training of cardiologists in the state.”
Physicians aspiring to specialize in cardiology must complete a fellowship program, typically requiring three to four years after they have already completed medical school, their internship and their residency. For those seeking further sub-specialization in interventional cardiology, for example, another year of training is also required. UMC’s cardiology fellowship program encompasses a three-year training period.
"Cardiovascular Associates is extremely pleased that the University has recognized our physician partners as high-quality, experienced practitioners, and offered us this opportunity to provide outstanding adjunct training to the cardiology fellows," added Cardiologist Steve Hindman, M.D.
